You guys, moving is tough. We still have boxes that need to be unpacked and photos that need to be hung on the walls and I just don't know when those things will happen. Will we be all unpacked by 2017? Who knows. Your guess is as good as mine. Despite all of the things that are not done, I'm managing to piece myself back together after the emotional trauma (a little dramatic, but that's kind of how it feels) of moving. So, if there are some boxes that sit around for a while because I decided to go to a cardio class with my bestie rather than unpack, so be it.
I'm so happy in our new home, but moving is tough. It just is. The best thing I've done for myself has been returning to healthy habits that help me get through even the most stressful days. One of those healthy habits is drinking ALL THE SMOOTHIES. Ok, not all of them. But one a day has been pretty great. Specifically this chocolatey, coffee-y, milkshakey one. This smoothie has been my go-to for the past week. It tastes amazing, is full of super healthy ingredients, and has no added sugar. I made it on a whim and quickly became obsessed with the rich, creamy texture and flavor. So GOOD you guys.
Also, can we talk about almond butter in smoothies for a sec? I have a hard time not adding it into nearly every smoothie I make. It amps up the flavor and the staying power, keeping me energized and level-headed. Because #bloodsugar.
And this smoothie fits right into my Go Sugar Free lifestyle. Things have been a bit up and down with that since I was pregnant with my sweet Braden (see what I did there?) but I've managed to keep things under control thanks to all that I learned when I took the GSF course a couple years ago. If you haven't already started thinking about lessening your sugar intake, now is the time, my friends! There is so much info out there reinforcing what some have known all along: sugar is TERRIBLE for our bodies and our brains. I'm a fan of the everything-in-moderation idea, but sugar is one thing that I seriously try to limit in my life. When I have a sweet tooth, I turn to recipes like this to keep my family and myself healthy and happy.
Also, if I haven't sung her praises enough in the past, you should know how amazing Jacqueline Smith is. She and her husband are a powerhouse team who have built Go Sugar Free into something people truly love. The community the course provides isseriously special. Click here to learn more and to register for the summer course, which begins TOMORROW!
I'm still a work in progress with this whole moving thing, but I'm reminded daily that self-care, in the form of both exercise and a healthy diet, are what help me continue to handle the everyday-life-things that don't go away just because I moved :)
On a related note, if you have any tips for quickly getting through those last 10 (or 20) boxes, I'm all ears!
Chocolate, Almond & Espresso Smoothie
Makes 1 smoothie
- 1 banana (frozen, if possible)
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened roasted almond butter
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons ground flax
- 2 pitted dates*
- 1/2 cup ice
- 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1 shot espresso, cooled (you can also use 1/3 cup strong coffee or 1 tablespoon instant espresso powder)
Combine all the ingredients, in the order listed, in a blender. Use the ice-crusher setting, if you have one, then blend on low until completely smooth (this can take some time with the dates). Pour into a glass and enjoy!
*to save time blending, soak the dates in warm water for 10-15 minutes. drain before adding to smoothie.
